Fishing after rain and in stained water: colour, contrast and tungsten control

Rain can change a water completely. Visibility drops, current increases, debris enters the system and baitfish move. That can create real opportunities for predator fishing, but your presentation has to change with it. Where clear water often rewards subtle and natural, stained water after rain often needs more contrast, more control and a clearer profile.

Colour: contrast over detail

In stained water, fish see less detail. Choose colours that create a clear signal or silhouette: white, chartreuse, dark brown, black, firetiger-style tones, glitter or strong belly-back contrast. The goal is not always the brightest colour, but a lure that can be found.

Weight: enough control, not too much

Extra current often asks for more weight, but fishing too heavy is still a common mistake. You want contact without ploughing the bottom. A compact tungsten weight cuts through current and gives a direct signal. Start just heavy enough to feel bottom, then adjust your pauses and retrieve speed.

Presentation: stay in the strike zone
